The spinal column is the central pathway for the spinal cord. The cord is composed of a large strand of nerve tissue and at each level of the spine; individual nerves branch off from the spinal cord. These nerves provide the brain with information about the body and allow the brain to control the movement and function of the body.
The spine is divided into four main sections:
1. The cervical spine is composed of seven vertebrae and generally controls the arms and hands.
2. The thoracic spine is composed of twelve vertebrae and controls the region of the chest and abdomen.
3. The lumbar spine is composed of five vertebrae and controls the region of the legs and feet.
4. The sacrum is the lowest part of the spine and serves as the junction between the spine and pelvis. These nerves control the bowel and bladder.
The vertebral body is the round core bone of the spinal column. The facet joints are the joints along the back side of the spine. Each vertebrae has two sets of facet joints. One pair that faces upward and the other pair face downward. These joints allow for the motion of the spine. The pedicle or transverse processes are the bones or “wings” on each side of the spine where the muscles attach. The spinous processes are the bones that you can feel along your back.
Between each pair of vertebrae is a shock absorbing disc made of cartilage. Each disc has a spongy central core surrounded by a tough outer ring. With time or trauma the spine can be injured. Degeneration of the spine usually occurs over time causing damage to the disc. This puts pressure on the spinal nerves which in turn causes pain and/or weakness in the arm, legs or back.
